Ryanair will let parents sit with young children for free after a CMA investigation, ending its mandatory family seat reservation fee.

Ryanair has revised its family seating policy, allowing parents to sit next to their young children without paying a seat reservation fee. The change follows an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which is examining whether the airline's previous policy breached consumer protection laws.

Under the updated system, families who choose not to pay for reserved seats will receive complimentary seat assignments after check-in. Ryanair said the approach matches the practice followed by most European airlines.

Previously, adults travelling with children had to pay for at least one reserved seat to ensure they were seated together. The fee, usually around £8 per flight, allowed parents to select seats next to up to four children at no extra cost. The CMA questioned whether this effectively required families to pay for seating arrangements that airlines are expected to provide under aviation safety rules.

Ryanair maintained that its previous policy complied with all legal requirements and gave customers the certainty of knowing their seat locations at the time of booking. The airline said the newly introduced free family seats will generally be located toward the rear of the aircraft, while premium front-row seats will remain reserved.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary described the move as a "minor policy tweak" and said the airline was "reluctantly" adopting the industry standard. He criticised the CMA, arguing that Ryanair's previous system was more transparent and consumer-friendly than those used by rival airlines. The company also said the policy change is not expected to affect its revenue.

The CMA welcomed the update but confirmed its investigation remains active. The regulator said it will assess whether the revised policy complies with consumer law while continuing to examine whether families were unfairly charged under the previous system.

Consumer group Which?, which had previously raised concerns over Ryanair's seating charges, welcomed the decision. Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said parents should never have been required to pay to sit with their children and that the organisation will monitor how the new policy works in practice to ensure families are seated together free of charge.

BOSTON, June 23 (England Times) – England were frustrated by a disciplined Ghana side as they were held to a 0-0 draw in their World Cup Group L clash on Tuesday, delaying their progress to the knockout stage. After an impressive opening victory over Croatia, Thomas Tuchel's side struggled to find their rhythm at Boston Stadium, where a crowd of 63,983 watched Ghana produce a resilient defensive display to earn a valuable point. Victory would have secured England's place in the last 32, but they were unable to break down a well-organised Ghana team that remained dangerous on the counter-attack throughout a disjointed contest.

England failed to register a shot on target until the 57th minute and were fortunate at times to avoid falling behind as Ghana exploited gaps in defence.

Seeking a breakthrough, Tuchel introduced Bukayo Saka, whose playing time is being carefully managed because of an Achilles problem, and replaced Jude Bellingham with Morgan Rogers.

Saka immediately added urgency to England's attack, forcing a fine save from Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, while substitute Nico O'Reilly came closest to a winner when his late header struck the crossbar.

Marc Guehi also saw a header cleared off the line as England increased the pressure in the closing stages.

Ghana, however, arguably had the strongest claim late in the match when Prince Kwabena Adu went down under a challenge from Ezri Konsa in the penalty area. Referee and VAR officials waved away appeals despite replays appearing to show the defender made no contact with the ball.

The result leaves England top of Group L but still needing a result against Panama in their final group match to guarantee qualification for the World Cup knockout phase.

Ghana remain in contention for progression after securing a hard-earned point against one of the tournament favourites.

Four British rowers launch a world-first 5,500-mile Indian Ocean crossing, aiming to raise £500,000 for brain health charities.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA — A team of British ocean rowers have completed their first week on the ground in Western Australia, entering the final high-stakes countdown before launching a historic, world-first maritime expedition. On 16th June, the four-person Brainwaves crew, proudly powered by headline sponsor Evolution Capital, will depart the Australian coast to begin a gruelling 5,500-mile, completely unsupported row across the Indian Ocean to Kenya.

The crew—comprising Billy Taylor, Lara Vafiadis, Susannah Cass, and Glyn Roberts—is aiming to smash two historic World Records: becoming the first mixed crew and the first women to ever successfully complete this specific continent-to-continent crossing by human power alone.

The line-up brings together distinct backgrounds from across the UK:

Billy Taylor kicks off the crew line-up, bringing extensive ocean-rowing and maritime expertise to the team. Co-Owner of the Atlantic Dash Rowing Race

Lara Vafiadis, representing Herefordshire and Worcestershire, brings proven ocean endurance to the water, having previously completed a solo Atlantic row in 2023.

Susannah Cass is a University of Cambridge alumna with a passion for the natural world. She has completed two previous ocean crossings, becoming the first woman to row across the Atlantic from Europe to South America. Plus she's the proud owner of 3 Blue Peter Badges.

Glyn Roberts hails proudly from the North East and is an ex-Royal Air Force officer, bringing critical military discipline, logistics and operational experience under high stress.

Living on a cramped 28-foot rowing boat with zero luxury or plumbing, the team expects to spend between 80 to 100 days at sea. They will navigate some of the world’s most hostile marine environments, battling 40-foot swells, intense tropical heat, and absolute isolation, whilst rowing a relentless schedule of two hours on, two hours off, 24 hours a day.

Lessons from the Ocean: Streaming Live into Classrooms

Crucially, the team is taking the next generation along for the ride. Partnering with Learn Live UK, an educational platform reaching over 3,000 schools, the crew will use their onboard satellite systems to host live video chats directly from the water into UK classrooms. This world-first educational link will engage thousands of students in real-world STEM lessons, geography, and ocean conservation, showing young people the true power of human resilience.

Vital Scientific Research at Sea

Beyond the extreme physical trial, the Brainwaves vessel will serve as an active platform for vital environmental and medical research. The crew will carry out onboard scientific data collection throughout the 5,500-mile crossing, including sampling for microplastic pollution to map ocean health, alongside tracking data to study how the human brain and body adapt to intense isolation, extreme trauma, and sleep deprivation.

A £500,000 Mission for Brain Health and Recovery

The overarching mission of the Brainwaves expedition is to raise a staggering £500,000 for two charities at the forefront of brain health and recovery:

Race Against Dementia: Funding breakthrough global research to fast-track a cure for dementia.

Rock2Recovery: Providing vital, fast-turnaround mental health support for veterans, first responders, and their families battling PTSD and severe anxiety.

With just days remaining before the boat leaves land, the expedition is making a final call to technology partners and corporate sponsors who want to join Evolution Capital on a global stage and back a historic British world-first.

EU faces calls to host UN women’s rights summit as US policies under Trump threaten global gender equality efforts and funding.

As the global right-wing shift directly threatens decades of progress on women’s rights, the European Union must step up and lead. If US policies make it impossible to hold the next session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York, the EU must be ready to host it in Europe. This is the clear message from the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament ahead of the 70th session of the CSW, taking place from 9 to 19 March 2026 and dedicated to ensuring access to justice for all women and girls.

S&D MEPs Lina Gálvez, chair of the European Parliament’s committee on women’s rights and gender equality, and Heléne Fritzon, S&D vice-president responsible for Feminist Europe, are travelling to the United States as part of an official European Parliament mission to participate in the CSW and defend gender equality worldwide.

In 2026, President Donald Trump has withdrawn the United States not only from UN Women but also from more than 60 UN organisations, including those central to gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights. The United States – once a cornerstone of multilateral cooperation – is now undermining it, defunding key bodies, and weakening the global fight against violence and discrimination targeting women and girls.

For the S&D Group, the message is unequivocal: Europe cannot stand by while women’s rights are traded for nationalist politics. As Washington turns its back on global equality, Europe must fill the leadership vacuum.
Lina Gálvez, chair of the FEMM committee and EP rapporteur on the resolution for the 70th CSW, said:

“Donald Trump’s withdrawal from international organisations defending women’s rights is not just a diplomatic decision – it is a political attack on the global system that protects women and girls. It emboldens those who want to roll back rights, silence survivors and normalise discrimination.

“Europe must not respond with caution or silence. If the United States makes it impossible to hold the CSW in New York, the European Union must immediately offer to host it. We cannot allow the world’s most important forum on women’s rights to become collateral damage of far-right ideology.

“Gender equality is not a side issue – it is the foundation of democracy. There is no freedom, no justice and no prosperity without women’s rights. If others abdicate responsibility, Europe must lead.”
Heléne Fritzon, S&D vice-president responsible for Feminist Europe, added:

“What we are witnessing is a deliberate and organised backlash. Authoritarian leaders and far-right movements are attacking sexual and reproductive rights, dismantling gender equality and starving women’s organisations of funding. This is about power – about pushing women back into silence and dependence.

“The theme of this year’s CSW – access to justice for all women and girls – goes to the core of the problem. Around the world, perpetrators too often escape accountability because they are powerful, wealthy or politically connected. Meanwhile, victims are questioned, discredited or ignored. That is not justice – it is inequality before the law.
“We are going to New York with an uncompromising message: justice systems must protect survivors, not perpetrators. Funding for women’s organisations must be strengthened, not cut. And there must be zero tolerance for all forms of violence against women. Europe will not be neutral in the face of misogyny and authoritarianism. We will stand up and fight for gender equality.”

Accessible and gender-neutral toilets with baby changing facilities have opened at Morden as part of TfL’s £15m investment programme.

This follows recent improvements including new accessible toilets at Clapton, Seven Sisters and White Hart Lane London Overground stations. TfL continues to explore the feasibility of toilets at stations across London, with Acton Central and New Cross Gate London Overground stations and Amersham Underground station the next locations to benefit from upgraded and new accessible facilities. Transport for London (TfL) has unveiled two new customer toilets at Morden Underground station as part of the Mayor of London’s wider plans to invest £15m in toilets for customers on the TfL network. The station is the first on the London Underground network to benefit from new toilets in this new phase of work. The absence of toilets can be a barrier for people travelling by public transport. In 2024 the Mayor committed to spending £3 million each year for five years to introduce toilets at select stations, increase the number of accessible toilets, enhance existing facilities, and improve overall availability so that customers are always within 20 minutes of a toilet without having to change trains.

A gender-neutral toilet and an accessible toilet, both with baby changing facilities, are now available at Morden where the former ticket office was situated. Morden is the first London Underground station to benefit from new toilets following the Mayor’s commitment, as well as the first station on the southernmost section of the Northern line’s Morden branch to offer facilities. It has been prioritised due to it being a terminus.

Accessible toilet facilities opened last year at Clapton, Seven Sisters and White Hart Lane London Overground stations as part of the programme. New accessible toilets will be installed next at New Cross Gate and then Acton Central London Overground stations. Work is currently underway at Amersham Underground station, where major refurbishment works will convert existing customer toilets into fully accessible facilities. Further new accessible toilets will be installed at Colindale, Leyton, Northolt and West Ham Underground stations, as well as at Surrey Quays London Overground station as part of wider station enhancement works.

Midlife refurbishments of existing toilet facilities - which can include new fixtures, fittings, flooring and tiles for a cleaner and more modern environment - were recently completed at High Barnet Underground station and Willesden Junction London Overground station. Refurbishment works are now underway at Penge West and Crystal Palace London Overground stations, with further locations due to start work soon, including Stanmore and Watford Underground stations as well as Bush Hill Park and Enfield Town London Overground stations. A further 37 locations on the TfL network have had an LED lighting upgrade in their toilets, for improved energy efficiency and ambiance.

Emma Strain, TfL’s Customer Director, said: “We know that for many people, not being able to access a toilet can be the difference between going out on the network or not, which can have a disruptive and devastating impact on their lives. The opening of these new toilets at Morden is a significant milestone in our work to increase and improve provision on our network, building on our programme of improved facilities at Tube stations across the capital, and ties into our commitment to make our wider network as fair, accessible and inclusive as possible.”

Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, said: "Toilet provision is critical for many Londoners and visitors, and can even determine whether somebody travels on public transport at all, so I’m pleased to see this new toilet at Morden station and many more facilities in the pipeline. The Mayor and I are committed to making our transport network as accessible as possible, and we're investing £3 million every year over five years to improve and increase accessible toilet facilities - the largest investment in toilets the network has ever seen - as we continue building a fairer and better London for everyone."

John McGeachy, Campaigns Manager, Age UK London: “London’s transport network should be accessible for everyone and that can’t happen without better provision of toilets. These new toilets at Morden station are very welcome. Many people using Morden station are travelling to or from central London and having toilets at Morden station will make those journeys that bit more comfortable. There may also be some people that start using this stretch of the Northern line where previously they avoided it. Good public transport can make a huge difference to people’s lives and any work to reduce barriers is vital. We hope that this momentum continues with more toilets on the network in 2026 alongside work to increase awareness about the locations of toilets.”

Cllr Eleanor Stringer, Deputy Leader of Merton Council and Cabinet Member for Civic Pride and Climate Change, said: “It’s fantastic that, after years of campaigning from the council and the local community, TfL are now opening new toilets at Morden station. This is a huge boost for making our transport network and town centre more accessible for everyone - especially older people, those with disabilities, and women and children. We look forward to continuing to work with TfL and the Mayor to improve transport accessibility in London.”

There are currently toilets available at 155 locations on the TfL transport network, with an additional 40 toilets within stations on the network that are not managed by TfL. TfL has created a handy Toilet Tube Map, which shows all the toilet facilities across the TfL network, including baby changing facilities and those that are wheelchair accessible.

All toilets across the TfL network are cleaned regularly. Customers can report anything in relation to toilets to any member of station staff and TfL is also developing a toilet best practice design guide to ensure that any new or upgraded toilets meet relevant standards and regulations, and are easy to maintain and less prone to abuse.

The Mayor of London’s commitments directly reinforce TfL’s customer inclusion strategy ‘Equity in Motion’ which launched two years ago, committing to more than 80 actions to make London’s transport network as fair, accessible and inclusive as possible. Actions that TfL has already delivered as part of this include improvements to lift and escalator designs, new Disability Equality Training for frontline London Underground staff that was developed with experts who have lived experience, and a new priority seat design that makes priority seating easier to identify on new DLR and Piccadilly line trains and refurbished Central, Waterloo & City line and Elizabeth line trains.
